Ever since I was a little girl I have never quite known what to say when someone asked what color my eyes are. Are they brown? Green? Blue? Eventually, I just started calling them hazel.
The other day I came across a website that discussed people who have two different colored eyes--a condition called heterochromia iridum. It turns out that there is a related condition called central heterochromia. This is what Wiki has to say about it:
Central heterochromia is an eye condition where there are two colors in the same iris; the central (pupillary) zone of the iris is a different color than the mid-peripheral (ciliary) zone. Eyes displaying central heterochromia are often referred to as "cat eyes" because of the appearance of a multi-colored iris. Central heterochromia appears to be prevalent in irises containing low amounts of melanin. Central heterochromia does not label an eye as hazel. This is because the outer ring of an eye affected by central heterochromia is that iris's true color.
I think it's kind of fascinating that the color of my eyes constitutes an "eye condition." Apparently central heterochromia is a dominant genetic trait. I know that Mom and Lara both have eyes like mine. Does anyone else in the family have multi-colored eyes? Any of the nieces and nephews?
And let me know what you think I should say when someone asks what color my eyes are!

Your eyes look like Lara's in my (always) humble opinion. (o: I thought it was a picture of her for a moment. I also have multi- colored eyes. They obviously run in the family.
Sweet! From now on when people ask for my eye color, I'll just tell them that they're central heterochromially colored. That'll clear things up perfectly!
Apparently the condition isn't too dominant since all my kids got Glen's brown eyes. I will check Ellie's in the morning, though, since hers aren't quite as brown as the rest of theirs, so it's possible that there's a little mix in there.
I forgot to mention Andrew has "cool" eyes too. (o: (You can't expect me to spell the correct term, even though Lara wrote it in her comment...)
Totally agree that your eye coloring is identical to Lara's. In fact both Mom and I thought that the picture was of Lara (except of course for your elegant eyebrows).
And yes Tim has similar textured eyes as you. Except for A.L. and Pete and I, the other seven of you probably have similar eyes.
Thanks for the research and educating all of us on this obviously rare and beautiful condition.
They almost look gray with a ring of brown in the middle. That's just my opinion though :)
My eyes are definitely blue.
My eyes are brown to the everyday, casual observer. Up close, under light and intense scrutiny though, they show a good deal of green, with some gold, red, and blue. Actually, my eyes seem to have a smokey grey-black rim. Here's my eyes up close: http://nebetseta.deviantart.com/art/My-Eyes-92393784
